Reflecting on the Definition of Art

Photographers and artists have long debated whether photography was art.
David Spitzer’s exhibition of digital photographs, on display through Sept. 28 at the Rothman Gallery in The Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College, takes on that debate and challenges the viewer to make up his or her own mind.
In this exhibition, titled “Reflections,” Spitzer has created a series of digital photo images based on reflections in store windows throughout the United States and Europe.¬†
“There are many concepts represented in the work, which are open to interpretation by the viewer,” said Claire Giblin, acting curator of The Phillips Museum. “The obvious beauty of saturated color and pleasing composition allow the viewer to spend time with each photograph, and in so doing discover information, social commentary and abstract impressions Spitzer has stressed for our consideration.”
Students of digital photography, design, photo manipulation, as well as social anthropology, cultural studies and photo commentary will be interested in this exhibition, Giblin said.
Spitzer, known primarily for his photos of jazz greats, will visit the exhibition on Sept. 18 at 4:30 p.m. for an artist’s talk and reception.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.  For more information on The Phillips Museum or for information about upcoming exhibitions, visit www.fandm.edu/phillipsmuseum.xml.
